Focus remains in Lisbon
Although speculation continues to connect him with a return to Madrid, Mourinho avoided fueling the conversation. Instead, he underlined his priority of guiding Benfica back into Europe’s top competition.
In his comments to Il Giornale, the veteran manager made it clear that his ambitions are tied to his present project, despite reports suggesting contractual flexibility that could allow a move.
Madrid’s search intensifies
Behind the scenes, Real Madrid are reportedly exploring managerial options as pressure mounts on Alvaro Arbeloa. The club’s leadership, spearheaded by Florentino Perez, is believed to be evaluating experienced figures capable of guiding the team through a challenging phase.
Mourinho is among several names linked with the role, though opinions remain divided. Former Madrid figure Guti has questioned whether the Portuguese coach still represents the ideal solution.
Emotional connection with Roma
While addressing his future, Mourinho also revisited his past, singling out his spell at Roma as the most fulfilling experience of his managerial career.
Despite leaving the club in early 2024, he described the atmosphere in Rome as unparalleled, highlighting the unwavering support from fans and the vibrant environment at the Olimpico.
His time there included notable success, with a Conference League triumph followed by a run to the Europa League final, achievements that strengthened his bond with supporters.
Mourinho also defended the Roma faithful, insisting responsibility for results should not fall on them.
Multiple candidates in frame
Real Madrid’s shortlist reportedly extends beyond Mourinho. Coaches such as Lionel Scaloni, Mauricio Pochettino, and Sebastian Hoeness are also being considered.
Arbeloa, who stepped into the role following Xabi Alonso’s departure, remains under scrutiny after inconsistent performances.
A Mourinho comeback would revive memories of his previous tenure between 2010 and 2013, when his Madrid side frequently clashed with Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona in one of football’s most intense rivalries.
