Florentino Perez Targets Mourinho Return Amid Real Madrid Uncertainty

A managerial change could be on the horizon at Real Madrid, and Jose Mourinho has emerged as a leading option to take over. The current Benfica head coach is reportedly being strongly considered by president Florentino Perez.

Uncertainty surrounding Alvaro Arbeloa’s role has triggered the search. Since replacing Xabi Alonso earlier in 2026, Arbeloa has been unable to deliver consistent results. With the club facing a second consecutive season without major honours, the leadership is exploring more experienced options.

Perez is believed to be directly involved in identifying the next head coach, favoring someone with a strong personality and proven success. Mourinho’s disciplined methods and psychological approach are seen as qualities that could strengthen a squad currently lacking resilience.

The Portuguese manager’s contract situation could facilitate a move. Reports suggest a release clause allows him to leave Benfica shortly after the campaign ends, provided a fee of approximately €3 million is paid. This detail has made discussions about his return increasingly credible.

Mourinho previously led Madrid between 2010 and 2013, a period remembered for its intensity and achievements. He guided the team to a historic La Liga triumph, breaking records while overcoming the dominance of Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona. His tenure also included three straight Champions League semi-final appearances.

Although his exit was contentious, his influence on the club’s resurgence remains widely acknowledged. Many supporters still associate his time in charge with renewed belief and competitiveness.

Despite his strong candidacy, Mourinho is not the sole option under review. Lionel Scaloni, Sebastian Hoeness from Stuttgart, and Mauricio Pochettino—linked to the United States men's national team—are also being evaluated.

An official announcement regarding the club’s next manager is expected after the ongoing domestic seasons conclude, with Arbeloa set to continue overseeing the team in the interim.
