The French attacker was withdrawn late in the match after experiencing discomfort in his left leg, prompting immediate concern within the club.
Following detailed medical examinations at the club’s training facilities, Madrid issued a statement confirming the nature of the problem. The report revealed that Mbappe is dealing with a muscle injury affecting the semitendinosus in his left leg, with his recovery to be monitored over time.
The statement read: “After the tests carried out today on our player Kylian Mbappe by the Real Madrid Medical Services, he has been diagnosed with a lesion in the semitendinosus muscle of his left leg. Pending evolution.”
Reports from Marca indicate that the striker is expected to miss the upcoming league fixture against Espanyol. However, there remains optimism that he could return in time for the highly anticipated meeting with Barcelona on May 10.
The issue first became evident during Mbappe’s 100th appearance for the club, when he requested to be substituted. Although initial scans suggested no major damage, further tests were required to fully assess the extent of the injury.
Head coach Alvaro Arbeloa admitted uncertainty after the game, stating: “I have no idea. He felt some discomfort. We'll see how he evolves over the next few days.” Mbappe reportedly headed straight for treatment immediately after leaving the pitch.
Attention now turns to the looming clash at the Spotify Camp Nou, where Madrid face Barcelona in a fixture that could influence the title race. While Los Blancos are currently behind their rivals in the standings, the importance of the match remains significant.
With roughly two weeks available for recovery, there is still hope that Mbappe could be fit to feature against Hansi Flick’s side.
Beyond club football, concerns are also growing in France as the 2026 World Cup approaches. Mbappe remains central to Didier Deschamps’ plans, especially after scoring more than 40 goals this season.
Madrid’s attacking depth is already under strain, particularly with Rodrygo dealing with a longer-term injury. The Espanyol match may see squad rotation, but the primary focus remains firmly on Mbappe’s recovery ahead of the Clasico.
