The visitors edged ahead just before the interval when Gyokeres was brought down inside the area by David Hancko, and the striker confidently dispatched the resulting penalty. Prior to that, opportunities had been limited, although Alvarez tested David Raya with a powerful attempt, while Noni Madueke sent a shot narrowly off target.

After the restart, Diego Simeone altered his system to a 3-4-3 setup, which shifted the momentum. Atletico emerged with greater urgency, creating a string of chances. Alvarez went close from a free-kick, Ademola Lookman’s effort was denied by Raya, and Antoine Griezmann saw a goal-bound strike blocked by Gabriel Magalhaes.

The equaliser eventually arrived when Marcos Llorente’s mishit effort struck Ben White’s arm, leading to another penalty. Alvarez stepped up and converted with authority.

From that point onward, Atletico dominated proceedings. Griezmann rattled the crossbar, while Lookman squandered multiple openings. Arsenal had a late opportunity to reclaim the lead when Eberechi Eze appeared to be fouled by Hancko, but the referee reversed the decision after a VAR review. Late attempts from Cristhian Mosquera and Declan Rice failed to produce a winner, leaving the tie evenly poised ahead of the second leg.
