‎Madrid speculation grows
‎Reports have suggested that Real Madrid could be considering Mourinho as a replacement for Alvaro Arbeloa, with club president Florentino Perez reportedly leading efforts to bring the Portuguese manager back. The Spanish giants, known for their European dominance, are said to be searching for stability after a difficult period.
‎Despite the growing links, Mourinho avoided engaging directly with the speculation, choosing instead to remain focused on his current role.
‎Mourinho prioritizes Benfica mission
‎Speaking to Il Giornale, Mourinho made it clear that his immediate objective lies in Portugal. He emphasized his determination to guide Benfica back into the Champions League, effectively cooling rumors of a near-term departure.
‎His comments come amid discussions about a potential exit clause in his contract, as well as criticism from former Madrid player Guti, who suggested the coach may no longer be at his peak and advised the club to explore other options.
‎Roma holds special place
‎Looking back on his managerial journey, Mourinho singled out his time in Rome as particularly significant. Despite his dismissal in January 2024, he described the atmosphere at Roma as unmatched in his career.
‎He recalled the passion of the supporters and the consistently full stadium, stating that the environment around the team stood out even compared to his biggest achievements elsewhere.
‎During his tenure, Mourinho led Roma to the UEFA Conference League title in 2022 and followed it with a Europa League final appearance, strengthening his connection with the fanbase.
‎He also defended Roma supporters, insisting they should not be blamed for the team’s shortcomings after his departure.
‎Pressure increases at Madrid
‎Meanwhile, scrutiny continues to build on Arbeloa at the Santiago Bernabéu. Appointed in January after Xabi Alonso left the role, Arbeloa has struggled to deliver consistent results.
‎Real Madrid are reportedly considering several high-profile candidates, including Lionel Scaloni, Mauricio Pochettino, and Sebastian Hoeness.
‎A return for Mourinho would mark his first spell at the club since 2010–2013, a period remembered for his fierce rivalry with Pep Guardiola and Barcelona.
