Lionel Messi Names Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal Among Top 2026 World Cup Favourites Ahead of Argentina

The Argentina national football team captain believes the defending world champions are not entering the tournament as the clear favourites despite their triumph in Qatar. Instead, the Inter Miami CF star pointed to four countries he feels are currently in stronger shape.

During an interview with Argentine journalist Pollo Alvarez, Messi stressed that Argentina must remain realistic about its standing among football’s elite. “We have to realise that ahead of us there are other favourites, who are arriving in better shape,” he explained.

One of the standout teams mentioned by Messi was Portugal national football team, led by long-time rival Cristiano Ronaldo. Messi praised the European side for its balance and overall squad quality, describing Portugal as a “very competitive team” with strength across the pitch.

Messi also highlighted France national football team as a major contender once again. Even after Argentina’s dramatic victory over France in the 2022 final, the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner remains cautious about the depth and consistency of Didier Deschamps’ squad.

“France is very strong again; it has tons of players at a very high level,” Messi said while referencing the quality available through stars such as Kylian Mbappé, Ousmane Dembélé and Michael Olise.

The Argentine icon also insisted that traditional giants Brazil national football team and Spain national football team remain dangerous despite periods of inconsistency in recent years.

“Spain and Brazil, which, even though they haven't been at their best for a little while, are always contenders,” Messi added.

The upcoming tournament is expected to mark the final World Cup appearances for both Messi and Ronaldo, adding even more attention to the competition. While Argentina will attempt to retain the trophy they secured in Qatar, Messi has shifted much of the pressure toward Portugal, France, Spain and Brazil by identifying them as the nations currently leading the race for football’s biggest prize.
