Wayne Rooney expected to become Rasmus Hojlund's striking coach at Manchester United amid Viktor Gyokeres transfer threat

Wayne Rooney is expected to return to Manchester United and become Rasmus Hojlund's striking coach.

Teddy Sheringham, a former United striker, believes that returning to Old Trafford would be an ideal option for Rooney, who lost his job as manager of Plymouth Argyle on New Year's Eve. Sheringham believes the 39-year-old will be an ideal striking coach for the Red Devils, able to strengthen the club's existing forwards, including Denmark international Rasmus Hojlund.

Sheringham asked by BoyleSports, which provides the most recent Premier League odds, if Wayne Rooney would make a good striking coach: "Without a question. I believe it is an increasingly crucial position. There are set-piece coaches, back four coaches, and striker coaches, and Wayne has been one of the best players in the nation.

"Could he aid Rasmus Hojlund? Of course. He's a seasoned player who has played for his country 100 times and scored at the highest level. So any counsel he gives you has to be taken seriously."

Victor Gyokeres of Sporting CP is heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford in the summer, and Sheringham believes the Swedish striker's arrival will harm Hojlund's place in the United squad: "Man Utd acquiring Viktor Gyokeres would be cruel on Rasmus Hojlund. Hojlund has been surviving on scraps for the last 18 months, and I think he's done exceptionally well to find himself on the scoreboard so frequently. Gyokeres may be a little step up, but spending that much money on Hojlund instead of Harry Kane at the time shows that they believe he is a fine player."

Hojlund may only have six months to establish himself as United's first-choice No.9, but Sheringham emphasized Gyokeres' credentials: "He's still learning his trade and he's still a young man." Gyokeres has established himself in Portugal, but the Premier League is a different game, particularly when it comes to stepping up on a weekly basis. His confidence is high in Portugal, but it will take time for him to adapt, and bringing him in would also hinder Hojlund's chances."

The Red Devils will look to build on their spirited performance at Anfield last weekend and return to winning ways on Sunday when they face Arsenal in an FA Cup third-round match.
