‎Wayne Rooney says Rashford wants Manchester United return after Villa loan resurgence

‎Wayne Rooney has suggested that Marcus Rashford would be eager to return to Manchester United, following a promising resurgence in form during his loan spell at Aston Villa.

‎The 27-year-old forward moved to the Midlands club in January on a temporary deal, which includes a £40 million option to buy. Since arriving at Villa Park, Rashford has rediscovered his rhythm, netting three times and displacing England international Ollie Watkins from the central striking role.
‎Speaking on Amazon Prime’s coverage of Aston Villa’s Champions League quarter-final defeat to Paris Saint-Germain, Rooney, who remains a legendary figure at Old Trafford, claimed Rashford’s heart still lies in Manchester.
‎“Marcus Rashford wants to play for Manchester United, 100 per cent,” said Rooney. “He is a Manchester lad, a United fan. The last couple of years have been tough for him. He needed to play, and it was clear he wouldn’t get that chance at United this season. In an ideal world, he wants to leave a legacy at United. Whether that’s possible or not, I don’t know – but that’s what I’d love to see.”
‎Rashford's departure came after a prolonged dip in form under new United boss Ruben Amorim, who effectively froze the England international out of the squad. His tally of just 15 goals from August 2023 to January 2025 raised questions over his long-term future at Old Trafford.
‎However, his strong start at Villa has reignited speculation. While the Birmingham club retain the right to make the move permanent, no final decision has been made. Interest from European giants, including Barcelona, further complicates the picture.
‎For now, Rashford appears focused on regaining his confidence and form—something that could reopen the door to a future at United. As Rooney hinted, a homegrown talent returning to glory in red remains an alluring prospect for both the player and the club.
