‎Kalvin Phillips is on the verge of departing Manchester City on loan, with Sheffield United set to secure the midfielder’s services until the end of the season. The Daily Telegraph reports that the Championship side are close to completing a deal that would see the City player step down a division.

‎Since arriving from Leeds United, Phillips has endured a frustrating spell at the Etihad Stadium, struggling to break into Pep Guardiola’s plans. Although he remains registered for Premier League action this campaign, he has yet to feature and recently picked up an injury that briefly stalled discussions.

‎Despite that setback, talks have continued. According to The Athletic, Sheffield United and Manchester City have now finalised an agreement, with Phillips scheduled to undergo a medical on deadline day. The loan arrangement does not include an option for a permanent transfer.

‎City invested £42 million ($57m) to sign Phillips in 2022, but his time at the club has been limited to just four starts over four years. In search of regular football, he has spent time away from the Etihad on multiple loan spells.

‎The England international joined Ipswich Town last season during their Championship campaign, though the club did not pursue a permanent move. He has also had a loan stint with West Ham, but his long-term future at City has remained uncertain.

‎Guardiola drew attention in 2022 when he publicly stated that Phillips had arrived overweight, explaining that the midfielder was not physically prepared to train or play. The City boss insisted the decision was purely football-related and that Phillips would return once ready.

‎Phillips later spoke candidly about the impact of those remarks, admitting they were among the hardest experiences of his career. While accepting Guardiola’s reasoning, he revealed the comments damaged his confidence and upset his family, particularly his mother, who stopped attending matches as frequently.

‎Two years later, Guardiola issued a public apology, acknowledging that he regretted making the comments in the media without first speaking privately to the player.

‎Now seeking a clean slate, Phillips is preparing for a potential revival at Bramall Lane. Sheffield United currently sit 17th in the Championship, 11 points behind the play-off positions, and hope his promotion-winning experience with Leeds can inspire a turnaround.
