Does Lionel Messi Even Care About Cristiano Ronaldo's 1,000-Goal Target?! Inter Miami Star's Interest Questioned

Cristiano Ronaldo’s relentless pursuit of 1,000 competitive career goals continues to dominate football conversations, but attention is also turning to whether long-time rival Lionel Messi is tracking the same historic benchmark.

The Portuguese icon, currently starring for Al-Nassr in the Saudi Pro League, is edging closer to the landmark and is widely expected to reach it before anyone else. Meanwhile, debate has emerged over whether Messi, now with Inter Miami CF, is even focused on matching that achievement.

A former teammate of Ronaldo at Manchester United, Giuseppe Rossi, shared insights into the mindset of both legends while speaking to GOAL, questioning how much Messi truly pays attention to Ronaldo’s individual targets.

Ronaldo’s March Toward 1,000 Goals Gathers Pace

Rossi, who joined Manchester United in 2004 shortly after Ronaldo arrived as a promising teenager, witnessed the early stages of a career that would evolve into global superstardom.

He noted that Ronaldo’s obsession with excellence was clear from the beginning and said his longevity at the top level has not surprised him. Now 41, Ronaldo continues to perform at elite level for both club and country and is preparing to captain Portugal at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

With consecutive Golden Boots secured in the Middle East, Ronaldo has already reached 965 career goals and is closing in on the iconic 1,000 mark. His trophy cabinet includes league titles, Champions League triumphs, and five Ballon d’Or awards, reinforcing his status as one of football’s most decorated figures.

Messi and Ronaldo: Two Legends, Two Different Mindsets

Argentine superstar Lionel Messi has spent his career matching or surpassing many of Ronaldo’s achievements. That raises the question of whether reaching 1,000 goals could become Ronaldo’s defining legacy—and whether Messi feels any pressure to follow.

Rossi reflected on the debate, saying Ronaldo’s love for individual recognition may make the milestone especially meaningful to him. He also emphasized how difficult goal scoring is at elite level, praising Ronaldo’s consistency over decades.

He described the achievement as something any striker would dream of, highlighting how rare and impressive 1,000 goals would be in professional football.

Will Messi Aim for the Same 1,000-Goal Milestone?

Messi, who turns 39 in June, is still producing elite numbers in Major League Soccer after committing to a contract extension with Inter Miami that runs through 2028. The World Cup winner continues to score 30 to 40 goals per season and recently added another Golden Boot in 2025.

He is approaching the 900-goal mark and could theoretically join Ronaldo in the exclusive 1,000-goal club if he maintains his current form.

However, Rossi admitted uncertainty over whether Messi is even focused on the milestone, suggesting the two legends may simply approach football differently. Still, he believes Messi’s consistency makes the target achievable within the next few years.

World Cup Ambitions and the Final Chapter of the Rivalry

Both icons remain central figures on the international stage. Messi is expected to feature for Argentina at the upcoming FIFA World Cup as defending champions, while Ronaldo aims to lead Portugal to their first-ever World Cup title.

There has even been speculation that Ronaldo could score his 1,000th career goal on football’s biggest stage, potentially in a World Cup final. However, the Al-Nassr forward dismissed the idea as unrealistic, saying football rarely delivers such perfect storylines.

Ronaldo also emphasized his focus on the present, insisting that national teams do not depend on one player alone and expressing his desire to continue contributing with goals as long as possible.

Despite recent questions surrounding his future in Saudi Arabia, Ronaldo remains under contract and is expected to continue playing beyond the next international tournament cycle, with retirement still not on the immediate horizon.
