Man Utd 'Third Choice' for Marcus Rashford as Barcelona Transfer Saga Drags On
Marcus Rashford’s spell with Manchester United appears to be nearing its conclusion, with former striker Louis Saha indicating that the England international no longer has a place at Old Trafford. Even if FC Barcelona decide not to activate the £26 million ($35m) purchase clause, a return to Manchester seems improbable for the 28-year-old.

Currently spending the 2025–26 season on loan in Spain, Rashford is widely expected to secure a permanent move elsewhere during the next transfer window. His journey at Manchester United began as a standout academy graduate, breaking into the first team under Louis van Gaal in February 2016 at just 18 years old.
That same year, he made headlines by becoming England’s youngest debut scorer before earning a spot in the national squad for the European Championship. Over time, his performances improved significantly, eventually surpassing 20 goals in a season and reaching a peak of 30 across all competitions during the 2022–23 campaign, which led to a lucrative contract extension.
However, a sharp decline in form followed. This downturn resulted in a temporary move to Aston Villa during the latter half of the 2024–25 season before another loan switch took him to Catalunya.
At Barcelona, Rashford has contributed 13 goals and 10 assists, strengthening his case for inclusion in England’s 2026 World Cup squad. Despite this, uncertainty surrounds his long-term future, especially as Barcelona remain hesitant to meet United’s valuation and instead hope for a reduced fee.
Manchester United, on the other hand, are standing firm in negotiations. This deadlock has left Rashford’s situation unresolved, with speculation suggesting he could return if interim manager Michael Carrick secures a permanent role.
Saha, however, doubts such a reunion will happen. He believes Rashford’s departure from United reflected a strong desire to leave, making a comeback unlikely. According to him, returning would position the forward as a “third choice” option rather than a key figure.
The forward himself has frequently expressed satisfaction with life in Spain and has made efforts to convince Barcelona to keep him alongside rising talents like Lamine Yamal. While he is on course to add a La Liga title to his achievements, having already won the Spanish Super Cup, his next destination may lie elsewhere.
With Manchester United aiming to strengthen their squad in pursuit of Premier League success, any transfer fee generated from Rashford—who has made 426 appearances for the club—could be redirected into new signings during an important recruitment period.
