Mbappé Overshadows Vinícius as Real Madrid Balance Comes Under Question

Kylian Mbappé’s presence at Real Madrid has become a growing talking point following a clear shift in the team’s form and attacking rhythm during his absence. The French forward has struggled to maintain his goal-scoring consistency since a knee sprain in early December, an injury that has visibly affected his performances.

During this period, Vinícius Júnior stepped into a leading role, taking charge of the attack and bringing renewed pace and confidence to a side that had briefly lost direction. His influence helped Real Madrid produce some of their strongest football of the season.

Since Mbappé was sidelined, Los Blancos have impressed in major competitions, including eliminating Manchester City from the Champions League and staying firmly in the La Liga title race alongside Barcelona.

Mbappé has missed seven matches since the start of 2026 due to ongoing knee issues, leaving Vinícius to shoulder the attacking responsibility. According to Spanish newspaper Sport, Vinicius rediscovered his top form during this period, regaining the level that made him indispensable before Mbappé’s arrival.

With full backing from manager Álvaro Arbeloa, Vinícius became Real Madrid’s leading scorer since the start of 2026, scoring 12 goals—two more than Mbappé—despite playing 770 extra minutes. His output also reflected a broader team improvement, with Madrid becoming more compact and rediscovering last season’s style of play.

Fans particularly enjoyed performances produced without both Mbappé and Bellingham on the pitch, a period that seemed to highlight better balance in the team’s structure.

However, that momentum did not fully continue. Mbappé’s return has not significantly improved the team’s flow or Vinícius’s output, while Bellingham’s role has become less defined due to Arda Güler’s strong performances in a similar position.

Concerns have since emerged over whether Mbappé’s style disrupts the team’s equilibrium. As Sport puts it, “The big question is whether Mbappé is upsetting Real Madrid’s balance due to an individualistic tendency that focuses solely on scoring goals, whilst neglecting collective duties.”

Mbappé himself has acknowledged that he tracks back less than his teammates, a detail that appears to clash with Álvaro Arbeloa’s tactical system.

On the pitch, Vinícius and Mbappé have yet to establish strong chemistry. While their personal relationship remains positive, Vinícius admits the partnership is still not fully developed. Mbappé often occupies similar spaces, does not consistently read Vinícius’s transitional runs, and at times reduces the space available for the Brazilian instead of creating it.

Despite this, Vinícius has still managed to provide five key passes for Mbappé, while the French forward has not returned the same support.
