The search for fresh leadership is underway in Madrid, and Emery has quickly emerged as a strong candidate. Reports from talkSPORT indicate that club president Florentino Perez and the board are seriously evaluating the 54-year-old as they prepare to move on from the current setup.
Emery’s reputation has risen significantly following his work with Aston Villa. Since taking over in 2022, the former Arsenal manager has reshaped the team into a consistent top-five performer in the Premier League. His approach has reflected the same tactical organisation and transfer expertise he displayed during successful spells in Spain with Sevilla and Villarreal.
Meanwhile, Jose Mourinho has also been mentioned as a possible option for a return to Madrid. The Portuguese coach previously managed the club between 2010 and 2013, securing three trophies, including a league title, during a fierce rivalry period with Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona. Mourinho is currently in charge of Benfica and is believed to have a clause in his contract.
Speaking on talkSPORT Breakfast, former Rangers manager Ally McCoist admitted he would prefer Emery to remain in England. He expressed admiration for the Spaniard and suggested his departure would be a major blow for Villa Park, while also noting curiosity about how he would handle players like Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Junior.
McCoist added that Emery’s record naturally puts him in contention for elite managerial roles, highlighting that despite a recent 2-1 loss to Tottenham Hotspur, his overall work remains impressive. He emphasized that Emery has succeeded at multiple levels, making the link to Madrid unsurprising, though he still hopes the coach stays put.
Under Emery, Villa secured seventh place in his first season, earning qualification for European competition through the Conference League and ending a long absence from continental football. The following campaign saw them qualify for the Champions League for the first time since 1983, reaching the quarter-finals before being eliminated by Paris Saint-Germain.
This season, Villa remain in contention for a place in the Europa League final, although they trail Nottingham Forest 1-0 on aggregate ahead of the decisive second leg.
